How to party with wine

20/01/2010 10:46:00 a.m.

THE holidays are a time of silliness, happiness and good times.
Here is the best way to get yourself in the mood for those long nights partying with friends.
Start with something light and bubbly, like Brown Brothers Zibibbo ($16.99).  Named after “zabib”, Arabic for raisins, it’s sweet, tasting like apples and muscatels. At only 6.5% alcohol you might consider it an ineffectual means of getting you partying, but don’t be fooled. It’ll still get you merry: my tasting panel got rowdy when we tried it.
The latest sav vintage is outstanding, so move on to one of these after the bubbles. Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc 2009 ($19.90) was rated highly by my panel for its lovely passionfruit aromas and palate, tropical salad sweetness with citrus to balance.
By now the night chill will be setting in, so you’ll need a red to warm you up.  I recommend Gunn Estate Hawkes Bay 2007 Silistria Syrah ($32.90).  It smells like blackberry and plum, with a ferrous sanguinity. Concentrated black fruits and liquorice fill the palate, with a lingering savouriness like sucking on a belt. Smoothe almost milky texture.
And the perfect hangover cure? Wine of the week: Gladstone Rosé 2009 ($21): pretty pink in colour, it smells like red berries and is luscious and mouth-filling.
