Deliciously Irish

Adrenaline junkies The Seven Irish Tenors.

IT’S a common misconception that The Seven Irish Tenors are a group of fat opera singers, says one of the tenors Simon Robinson.
“The truth is we are in good shape and have a good head of hair,” laughs Robinson. “When people hear ‘tenor’ they think of Pavarotti. He was a great man and his lungs were the same as both yours and mine put together but people forget that Freddy Mercury was a top tenor too.”
In fact, the tenors are a bunch of pretty boys with good hair, sexy accents, and none is older than 30.
It seems young women haven’t quite cottoned onto this phenomenon – older women have.
Robinson says many concert-goers, in the mid-30s and up, say they would like to introduce their younger nieces or daughters to one of the tenors.
While none of the Seven Irish Tenors is married, most have girlfriends and partners.
“Most of us are wrapped around the finger and under the thumb,” says Robinson.
The tenors will perform a two-hour show featuring Danny Bhoy, The Rose of Tralee, Bridge Over Troubled Water and Hey Jude.
But don’t be fooled by their tender traditional numbers, these guys are adventure junkies.
“New Zealand is one place in the world I have always wanted to go to. I plan to go skydiving, bungy jumping and white water rafting. These are some of the things I want to do before I die,” says Robinson who thinks getting old – at 27(!) – is even more reason to get involved in extreme sport.
“I have a few grey hairs,” he says in a delicious Irish accent.
The Seven Irish Tenors, Opera House, 7.30pm, February 6.
