Caledonian goes upmarket

Work to convert the downstairs area of the old hotel began at the end of January, and is expected to finish around June, says Robyn Green of Newman Green Holdings.
“We’re turning downstairs into 22 decent-sized rooms with quality fittings and broadband. Each room will have its own ensuite, and we’re thinking about having mini bar [sized] fridges in each one,” says Green, adding the kitchen will be shared.
Unlike the upstairs boarding facility, the new downstairs area will be aimed at working professionals at the higher end of the market.
“We will be renaming it as well, as there are certain connotations that pop up when you talk about the Caledonian. We’re thinking of something crickety,” Green laughs.
She says the renovation is being done particularly with women in mind, and it will be secured with swipe card access.
Newman Green Holdings have owned the premises since 1999 and commercially leased the building until the end of 2007. Since then, they’ve been running the boarding facility upstairs.
