New Newtown cafe

Kreuzberg summer café owners Joe Slater and Mike Stewart are behind the venture. Like Kreuzberg which serves coffees and cakes from a caravan in an empty parking lot at the top of Cuba St, Monterey will have the same “casual feel,” says Slater.
“But we’ll open in the evenings and serve dinner and drinks. The idea is that it’s a place you can ‘go out to’ without having to venture into town.
“We’re going for a mix between party oriented joints on Cuba and more relaxed dining restaurants such as Sweet Mothers.”
Monterey will serve signature soft drinks and homemade lemonade.
“People can roll up in their jandals, take a booth, drink beer and play scrabble all night or book a table, drink wine and taste our delicious selection of food.”
Slater adds, Newtown is one of the few places left where people with new ideas, and less commercial ventures, can still set up.”
