THE bedraggled Hungry Kiwi café on Courtenay Place has gone, and been replaced by a vibrant café where you can eat the containers your food comes in.
Kapai opened this week after several weeks of renovations. The café is the third Kapai instalment in Wellington – the others are on Lambton Quay and Willis Street.
“The other ones are more lunch-time operations where you design your own salads. This is an all day café, open until dinner,” says James Irvine, who co-owns Kapai with his brother Sam, and friend Justin Lester.
Kapai has a Kiwi theme, and the majority of its juice, beer, and wine are sourced locally. It also takes an environmental approach to packaging. The containers are made out of potato starch.
“With a bit of salad and dressing they are tasty, but if you’re desperate you can get away with eating it as it is,” laughs James. Kapai on Courtney Place is open until late.
