Guess who's back
After a “hellish” two years in which her international record deal with Blue Note Records, the parent company of EMI, failed to come into fruition, the singer is now managing her own music.
“I couldn’t have done it any differently. I protected myself as much as I could and I had three lawyers all over the world looking at it,” Smith says. “I’m not focusing overseas at the moment, I’m just focusing on New Zealand. I’ll worry about the rest later.”
Broke after the “huge” cost of getting out of the Blue Note contract, Smith was unable to write music because of the stress of the ordeal.
“Now I’ve moved in with some good friends into a nice big place with a studio, my own space and my own bed,” she says.
And almost three years after the release of her number one debut album Long Player, Smith has just released another, Humour and the Misfortune of Others. It’s gone straight to number one iTunes.
The name refers to her unfortunate series of events. “You kind of have to laugh and see the humorous side in the end. You have to be quietly smug about how ridiculous it was,” Smith says.
To promote the new album she’s about to embark on her first tour in a while. Smith has mixed feelings.
“The tour isn’t daunting, but it’s the mental side of ‘let’s not screw this up’,” she laughs. “It does feel good – it’s just a little run to start off with, but we’re getting there [musically] and it’s starting to come together ok.”
Smith is definitely excited about coming back to Wellington. Her first port of call will be Matterhorn “my local, my home away from home” followed by a mulata cocktail at Havana. Cheers Hollie.
Hollie Smith, San Francisco Bathhouse, April 16.
