The Mammoth Cheese

Last month I ran my annual beer and cheese tasting at Regional Wines and Spirits.
For the 4th year running I presented 8 local artisan cheeses and matched them with some of the best craft beers from around New Zealand and the world. At the end of each tasting session those in attendance were asked to vote for their favourite beer, their favourite cheese and their favourite combination. For the second year in a row Marlborough’s Pink Elephant Mammoth won the popular vote for both the best beer, and when served with Neudorf Dairy’s Richmond Red, the best match. The Pink Elephant Brewery is the creation of idiosyncratic ex-pat Englishman Roger Pink. Often described as the ‘Ben Elton of Brewing’, Roger Pink has a legendary reputation in the brewing world in large part due to his dry sense of humour and his eccentrically branded original ales. Mammoth is a strong amber ale brewed very much in the English tradition. Roger has been brewing it since 1990 making it one of the nation’s oldest craft beers. Pouring a dark shade of copper, Mammoth offers up aromas of rich nutty malt, caramel, orange fruit and a hint of earthy hop, in the mouth the beer has a rich rounded ginger cake note, more orange fruit notes, and a balancing bitter finish. For a 7%abv beer Mammoth is dangerously drinkable particularly when served with a chunk of hard nutty sheep cheese as it was at the tasting. Mammoth is available from Regional Wines and Spirits while Richmond Red can be found at Moore Wilson’s Fresh. Cheers
