Lovely pianists
Garth WilshereTHE first of this imaginative series brought together two of our excellent pianists in piano duet and solos.
Their solos were Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in A flat major from Sayers; and Schubert’s impromptu for piano, Drei Klavierstücke D 946 (Three piano pieces), No. 2 Allegretto, from Mapp. I think the concert would have been better structured and more distinctive for audiences as just a piano duet recital.
The evening really came alive with both of them at the piano.
The quirky Satie, Pieces in the form of a Pear were intriguing fun.
Mozart’s sparkling Sonata in F for piano duet, K497 was lovely, quintessential Mozart – operatic, dramatic, witty – and beautifully done.
Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, last heard in this venue with Pascal Rogé and his partner Ami Hakumo was as delightful and charming as ever in a great, tonally colourful, performance from Mapp and Sayers, and so were The Three Brahms Hungarian Dances, Nos 5, 7 and 8.
The new commission for this tour from Kenneth Young – Variations on a Prayer – fitted well into a programme featuring French music, being reminiscent in style to the French School. It is a piece in the spirit of a prayer and composed in the spirit of variations, a good addition to the repertoire.
This was a very smart recital capped of by the pizzazz of the stylish encore of Vincent Youman’s Tea for Two. We could have had more of other such delightful arrangements.
