THE old dance socks are in the bin.
There will be no Dance Your Socks Off Festival this year as Wellington’s dance community works out a new festival for 2011.
“It won’t return in its present form, but a prototype festival will launch next year,” says Linda Lim, the new Wellington Dance Festival strategy writer.
Dance Your Socks Off had previously been run by the Wellington City Council, but after 14 successful years they decided to hand ownership to the dance community of Wellington.
“We will take the event to the next level. 23% of New Zealand women dance, and Dance Your Socks Off had a huge amount of support,” Lim says.
Lim works at Dance Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ), and the national dance organisation is partnering with city venues and the council to support the new festival.
“The future of Wellington dance is bright and the challenge will be for the new Wellington Dance Festival to continue the legacy,” says Lim. “We want a colourful, vibrant and diverse celebration of dance in the events capital of NZ.”
To bridge the gap in 2010 before the prototype Festival, a number of dance events are planned including a Global Dance Celebration in September at
Te Papa.
