Hey kid, thanks for the wine
Mount Victoria resident Bridget Dunn says public criticism is unfounded and it’s no big deal under 18 year-old students are selling wine to raise funds.
She bought a case of wine through a student last week.
“He knocked on the door, pulled out all the paperwork and we decided to buy a case. His parents are going to deliver the wine later on, and it is completely legit,” says Dunn.
Earlier this week an anonymous source criticised the school for allowing pupils to sell wine to fundraise for a year-12/13 trip to Europe.
Wellington College associate principal David Ashby says kids are allowed to hand out forms, but the boxes must be handed over by their parents.
“Some kids got overenthusiastic and emailed all the people on their parents email, but no students have been accused of handing over wine.”
Ashby is disappointed the complaint was made public, rather than through the school.
“There are lots of things people could have a crack at the school for, but this fundraiser has gone on for years with no problems.”
However, Dunn says the community should support the fact a wine supplier has provided students with a discounted product, and it’s for a good cause.
“All the students fundraising are under-18, and it’s ridiculous to make an issue out of it – what about the kids that sell you wine at the supermarket checkout?” says Dunn. “There is always someone who wants to complain, but these kids are fundraising, not drinking the stuff.”
