KAPAI owner Justin Lester has just become a father and wants to be a city councillor.
When Capital Times contacted Lester about his just announced bid for the Northern Ward, he was in another kind of ward, a post-natal one, celebrating his new-born girl Madeleine.
“It’s our first kid. But it’s all right, we can talk now,” laughs Lester.
The willingness to talk on his girl’s birthday is a taste of his commitment to the city.
Launching Kapai has been a major success for Lester who is now eyeing up another challenge.
“I had no experience in the hospitality industry when we started out, but I made that a go.”
As a businesses owner, Lester says he is fiscally conservative but socially liberal.
Heavily involved in Wellington life, he set up Wellington Young Professionals, which has a membership of over 600, is on the board of Capital Football, and the Property Council.
The 31 year-old lives in Ngaio with wife Elizabeth, but with the family growing they are planning a move to Johnsonville.
“I want to give a heart to the Northern Ward, because it’s fallen off the radar in terms of investment,” Lester says. “Just getting across Johnsonville is a real pain in the ass, and dangerous for kids.”
An avid cyclist, Lester is keen on improving public transport.
“I normally cycle the Ngaio gorge. I’d do anything to encourage people to get out of their cars – even hand out [Kapai] baked potatoes,” he laughs.
