“THE Queen has sex too”, says “Drag King” Andy Harness.
In the past Harness has done the full monty on stage, performed a skit which sexualises the Queen and caused people to storm out of his shows, but he promises his new show Risqué is for everybody, not just the queer community.
Harness, along with fellow performer Cathie Sheat (who were both in the popular NZ Drag Kings troupe) and a whole new array of characters will perform Risqué in front of an eager audience.
“There’s something for everybody, if you like having a laugh, experiencing a little glam and definitely some rudies, then this show is definitely for you”, says Harness.
“People who are staunchly royalist can expect to see the Queen portrayed as a more sexual being than perhaps they have in the past.”
Harness and Sheat feel the show is long overdue for Wellington audiences, and are “flabbergasted” nobody has done it sooner.
“About three years ago there was a show for a charity event that could be comparable to ours, but apart from that there hasn’t been anything else,” says Harness.
Wellingtonian Sheat has been cross-dressing since she was a kid, and feels that the capital is a friendly city for the queer community, which she feels needs more support and understanding.
“I would like to see more awareness campaigns, sometimes transgender people face big barriers in daily life and lots of discrimination. It’s important to give people respect, no matter who they are and what they do,” she says.
Sheat, who has received complaints after her performances in the past, generally feels audiences know what to expect.
“We like to push a few buttons,” she laughs.
“I have been cross-dressing since my youth. I always enjoyed playing around with costumes and would rather be a soldier or a pirate than a female character. When I was younger there were more roles for male characters in school plays, and I found myself cast in those, often due to a lack of boys taking part”.
Risqué, Ruby Lounge, 9pm, August 14.
