Quickwits Tom Mitchell and Duncan McLachlan from Wellington College.

THEY may be quiet and reserved when you chat to them face to face but on stage they are confident and eloquent – not to mention winners.
Wellington College’s Tom Mitchell and Duncan McLachlan teamed up with Scots College’s James Gavey to secure Wellington’s second Russell McVeigh Schools Debating Championships win this week.
In the grand final the Wellington boys debated in favour of the motion that “all alcohol advertising should be banned”.
The boys argued that there’s a clear link between advertising and binge drinking culture in New Zealand, referring to TV and magazine alcohol ads.
“One company in particular implies through their ads that if you’re a supporter of New Zealand’s nuclear free policy you should drink their beer. That’s ridiculous,” Mitchell says.
The boys admit there is a lot of rivalry in Wellington and Auckland debating circles.
“We lost to them in the round robin competition so it was good to come back from that and beat them in the final.”
The boys agree that their talents at public speaking are a good foundation for a career in politics. But unlike these sharp wits, “politicians can sometimes say silly things,” McLachlan laughs.
The boys emphasise they couldn’t have won the country’s most prestigious school debating competition without the help of their coaches Clodagh O’Connor and Stephen Wittington.
