Coyotes proves hidden gem

25/08/2010 5:18:00 p.m.

AS a newcomer to the capital dining scene I had previously viewed Coyotes Bar and Restaurant as a venue more popular with late night revellers than a quality dining venue. Coyotes proved me wrong.
Right on Courtenay Place, Coyotes offers a secluded, tranquil ambience in its restaurant for those who choose to take a break from the chaos that can often overwhelm people on the party strip.
From the first minute I entered I was impressed. A well-presented and friendly waitress greeted us and her description of the specials of the day added to our anticipation.
The starters platter provided a diverse and appetising mix with succulent popcorn prawns (my friend quickly finished these), jalapeno bites, barbecue wings and Creole potato skins - my highlight.
For the mains we chose the premium New Zealand aged Yucatan beefsteak and the Cherokee Chicken dish.
The dishes looked immaculate and smelled delicious. My partner could hardly control herself and almost took a bite of her chicken before I had time to take a picture.
The Yucatan steak was a 200g taste of heaven served with delicious garlic mashed potato, grainy mustard and cheese on Portobello mushrooms with a bacon wafer, finished with a red wine jus.
This perfectly cooked fillet was one for the connoisseur offering finesse and class.
My partner was equally impressed; the Cherokee Chicken selection provided a superb balance of flavours, belying an earlier remark that “I never order chicken when I go out”.
Four succulent breast pieces were wrapped in bacon, and filled with sun-dried tomato, feta, roasted capsicum and rosemary stuffing, and served on creamy mashed potato and a merlot glaze. This dish tastes even better than it sounds, with the stuffing complementing the chicken and mashed potatoes.
For dessert we shared a roasted pear and hazelnut zabaglione (Italian custard), served with whipped cream. It was a delicious delicacy to complement what was an enjoyable night.
