Requests for help are normally co-ordinated through the Ministry of Civil Defence bunker under the Beehive, but Wellington City Council communications manager Richard MacLean says the council decided to “pre-empt” the process and offer first “rather than sitting on our hands”.
Six Wellington City Council building engineer employees left for Christchurch early yesterday to help assess damage caused by Saturday’s quake and drainage guys may be on the way too.
Group building consents manager John Scott says it’s to “allow those [Christchurch] guys a bit of a break”.
Emergency Preparedness Manager Fred Mecoy says offers of 12 drainage employees “and a number of others” have been made.
“There are so many buildings [down there] and overnight they had about two or three large aftershocks, which basically means they have to start again.”
