SUPERGYRATION: The Datsuns’ Ben Cole, Christian Livingstone, Dolf de Borst and Philip Somervell are back.

THE Datsuns have an album’s worth of new material to showcase at their first show in Wellington in five months.
“It will be a chance to blow out the cobwebs - expect it to be loud and sloppy,” says vocalist and bass player Dolf de Borst.
Since their year-long promotional tour of Head Stunts two years ago, de Borst has written new material for The Datsuns, toured with Sweden’s Imperial State Electric (on bass) and built a music studio in Stockholm.
The studio is a collaboration between de Borst, sound engineer Fred Estby and Nicke Andersson, from The Hellacopters and Imperial State Electric.
“We have been collecting gear and vintage equipment over the last four or five years” says de Borst, who is stoked the studio is now complete.
When the Cambridge band released their first studio album in the early 2000s, NME voted them Best Live Band; they featured on John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show; received Best Album, Group and Breakthrough Artist accolades at the New Zealand Music Awards; played Ozzfest with Ozzy Osbourne; supported Metallica in Australia, and recorded their second album with Led Zepplin’s John Paul Jones.
De Borst describes these achievements as a double edged sword, which he ultimately doesn’t like to think about too much.
“All these things open doors but sometimes you have to live up to these things and some people are quite cynical about music. At the end of the day I am doing it to have fun, to be creative, and for the cathartic experience on stage.”
The Datsuns with Milk Train, Bodega, 8.30pm, September 10.
