Thursty work
Thurston’s work Fulfillment, entered in this year’s New Zealand Art Show, attracted the attention of judges from online wine retailer Winesale.co.nz, who commissioned Thurston to design a label for 12,000 limited edition wine bottles as well as having the wine named after him.
Thurston will produce two artworks, both of which will be owned by the online retailer. One work will be designed for the label and the other will be donated to the New Zealand Affordable Arts Trust to be exhibited at art galleries, hospitals and schools around the country.
“I’m really looking forward to starting the process, I always like trying new mediums and this will be a perfect opportunity for me to stretch myself artistically,” says Thurston.
Thurston has been painting for 13 years and describes his artistic style as “abstract expressionism”. He has a degree in Spatial Design from Massey University and works from his studio in Seatoun.
For every specially labelled wine bottle sold, Thurston and the New Zealand Art Show will receive $1 each, to help support their future and encourage artists like Thurston to pursue their talent.
“Wine makers are artists too and we can strongly relate to the struggles they face,” says General Manager of Winesale.co.nz Michael Mebus. “Especially when they are first starting out.”
Thurston’s limited edition wine collection will be completed by December, and the label will appear on bottles of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir varieties sold at Hippoptomus Restaurant and Winesale.co.nz.
