Rough rehearsals

Actors John Bach and Mel Dodge have been rehearsing Father Familiar in the lounge of a Christchurch house.
They lost a third of their usual rehearsal time when Mazda Theatre in Christchurch CBD was shut off to the public.
“You’re in limbo – you can’t clear your head and concentrate on the next thing,” said lead actor John Bach.
The crew were forced to practice in their director’s suburban Christchurch home.
Rehearsals were kept interesting as every now and then the aftershocks shook them up.
“It’s like having a fog in your head and trying to clear it but these damn aftershocks kept coming back.”
Despite all the aftershocks and a hectic lead up to the premiere, Bach says he’s taking a positive approach to the whole situation.
“We will get there. This is a good show and we need to do it justice. We want to make sure Wellington sees a good show,” he said.
Father Familiar was written specially for Bach and actress Mel Dodge.
Bach (Lord of the Rings, Duggan, and Spartacus) and Dodge (Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Uncle Vanya) asked writer Branwan Miller to create a play for them.
The play took over a year from inception to production, with Miller drawing on experiences gained from travelling around the world.
The production follows the reunion of a daughter and her estranged father.
Father Familiar, Bats Theatre, 8.30pm, September 15 – October 2.
