Who will turn green?
Capital Times asked mayoral candidate Celia Wade-Brown whether she would be a likely contender.
Wade-Brown says she’s more interested in having her fingers in lots of pies (in the council) rather than taking on a specialised role in Central Government. She says unless you’re the Prime Minister, you have to specialise.
“The Greens are having their selection meeting next week and I haven’t put my nomination in,” she says. “I’m more interested in the city. I was on council with Sue in the 90s. She’s done a great job.”
Kedgley has been a Green Party MP since 1999 and has campaigned for “safe food” – securing the green party’s $3 million school nutrition fund. She says Wellington people need to push forward with the light rail network, but also keep water in public ownership.
“The Government is just pushing through a bill that will allow councils to contract water in Wellington for 35 years. That’s a big issue that we have to watch very carefully in Wellington.”
She’s not leaving for another year yet and don’t expect any tears when she finally does because she always planned to serve just four terms.
Sources suggest that Russel Norman might be a likely contender in the September 28 election but Norman says that’s not correct.
“I will be wanting to run in Rongotai.”
