Big-time Winnie fan Jan Preston.

THE life of boogie-woogie and ragtime piano queen Winifred Atwell will be celebrated on Sunday with a night of sparkly cabaret. Pianist Jan Preston, sister of Wellington filmmaker Gaylene, says her show is inspired by audiences who loved it when she played Atwell’s popular tune Black and White Rag in her own boogie-woogie shows. Preston and her band will perform live renditions of Atwell favourties, but the show is not just a concert. The multi-media evening will incorporate 150 photos of Atwell taken in Australia and New Zealand during the 1950s and 1960s, along with narration detailing her very interesting life. Jan Preston spent two years researching the show to ensure it is an accurate insight into the ‘real’ Winnie – the personality that drew so many to her and the smile that won them over. Hugely popular in Australasia, Winifred Atwell loved its people too. She eventually moved to Sydney with her partner and together they lived out the last 17 years of their lives there.
