Who hasn’t had an awkward kitchen moment? Geraldine Brophy and Bea Joblin can relate.

Who hasn’t had an awkward kitchen moment? Geraldine Brophy and Bea Joblin can relate.

“IF these walls had ears,” must be especially true of kitchens.
Based on the stories, recipes and secrets told in this space, Geraldine Brophy and daughter Bea Joblin have written a play about life, love and the universe.
Extending the family involvement further, Brophy’s husband Ross Joblin is directing Ladies A Plate, in which his wife and daughter play all characters ranging from a seven-year-old to a grandmother. Ross says “his girls” both love food, are avid cooks and bakers and the theme was an obvious one to hang more serious stories from.
“For example you take the old New Zealand ANZAC biscuit and tell a story around it about a young man going off to war,” he says.
The Box Theatre is also a Brophy-Joblin family endeavour. The warehouse, which has housed Cogitate Gallery for five years, has been transformed into a theatre complete with stage, lights and seating for 100 people. The space is shared and will still house the gallery, as well as being available for lease as a rehearsal, concert or performance space.
“Petone has got its own flavour. There’s a real vibe here and we’ve bought into that.”
Recipe collectors would be smart to carry a pen and notebook; there are family recipes narrated through the play.
