Rock on
The $65 million dollar terminal looks a far cry from the traditional international departure point.
“The copper cladding archways have a great presence in the international waiting area, opening the space up with natural light from the glass fissures in the roof and floor,” says Wellington International Airport chief executive, Steven Fitzgerald.
Backlighting at night also creates a glow, which will be seen through these fissures from the air.
“The Rock” is inspired by Wellington’s South Coast and the surrounding environment. Where possible, materials have been recycled or salvaged. This includes the reupholstering of seats and the reuse of ceiling tiles, lights and gate signs.
“The copper cladding will change over time to browns and greens due to exposure to the weather. This was done deliberately by the architects to make it look even more like the landscape,” says Fitzgerald.
While passengers cannot see inside the structure they are able to view the materials up close, and to touch them.
The official opening is on October 27. Only international travellers can see the terminal so you’ll have to wait for the public open morning on November 21 for tours.
