Weekend parking change delayed

6/10/2010 11:47:00 a.m.

WELLINGTON City Council has delayed the decision of reducing weekend parking time limits to two hours for a week to allow more investigation.
Two people voiced their concerns at a full council meeting on September 29: The Very Reverend Frank Nelson, Dean of Wellington Cathedral, with concerns that “two hours is not enough time for church involvement” and Pauline Swann on concert goers planning to take their patronage elsewhere.
“I had a number of Sunday Chamber Music concert goers contact me…A number of the concert patrons live in the Hutt Valley and told me they were seriously considering not renewing their bookings for next year but will support similar concerts in Upper and Lower Hutt,” she said.
Wellington City Council wants to encourage weekend shopping by increasing turnover of available spaces, thus freeing up parks.
Council transport planner Stephen Carruthers says parking restrictions would benefit shoppers, but those who just want to go out for lunch or a waterfront walk may go elsewhere because they can’t find a park.
The time restrictions would apply to 3400 CBD metered and pay-and-display parks from 8am to 6pm Sundays. Free weekend parking began in 1996 to encourage people to shop in the city. Council will vote on the matter at its full meeting on October 6.
