Slow vote
Wellington returns are lower than both Christchurch and Auckland. In Christchurch, 29 percent of people have voted, compared with 24 percent in 2007 and in Auckland voting returns sit at 27 percent compared with 22 percent in 2007.
Wellington City Council electoral officer Ross Bly says, “The jump in returns in Auckland and Christchurch is understandable given local events there.”
In response to queries regarding slow vote returns in Wellington, Bly says, “We never really know why there’s a slow turnout, but generally it’s just apathy. People don’t understand the workings of local government and how important it is for their everyday lives.”
In 2007, less than 40 percent of eligible Wellington voters did so. The voting office is hoping to beat that this year. Voting closes midday Saturday.
