Speed limit changes have been in place in Aro Valley since May

Speed limit changes have been in place in Aro Valley since May

ISLAND Bay and Kilbirnie now have new speed limits: 30 km/h. The change is part of a four-year plan to reduce speed limits through Wellington’s shopping areas. The “Golden Mile”, which covers streets in the CBD that run between the railway station, Lambton Quay and Courtenay Place, is also due for a speed limit change later this year. Speed limit changes have been in effect in Thorndon since January and in Aro Valley since May. Community Centre Coordinator Sarah Jane Parton says anecdotal evidence from Aro Valley Community Council meetings suggests many drivers are not yet obeying the speed limit changes.
“Somebody actually overtook me in the 30 km zone the other day! We’re still trying to come up with creative ways to slow people down. We’re not sure if people are frustrated at the changes or if they just don’t know about them,” she says.
Aro Valley residents say the road was only painted with the new speed limit last week, and some of the signs, which have been in place since May, are partially obscured or easy to miss. Brooklyn and Kelburn shopping areas are next, with public consultation regarding the changes beginning October 23.
