WARREN Maxwell is sitting in his car on the Rimutakas watching a storm unravel when he makes his admission.
It’s not entirely true, but good news doesn’t make headlines, so he’s giving me dirt.
“I’m having an affair with Strike. The other women in my lives, Little Bushman and Trinity Roots, don’t know,” he says.
Maxwell has travelled back and forth between Wairarapa and Wellington to meet his new lover over the past two months. Or lovers. Strike percussion group has five members.
When it comes to details of the affair, Maxwell won’t give much away. What he does assure you is that the gig is more than just two musical acts playing side by side.
“We’re acutely aware that our fans deserve something different than what they’ve seen before. My songs are usually roots and reggae based and because Strike’s leader Murray is a drum and bass and trance head from the Gathering days, Strike often heads in that direction. We’ve steered clear of both.”
Maxwell drops clues, but he won’t give the game away.
“Think of another style of music that has the frenetic pace of drum n bass or Batucada rhythms, but isn’t either of those.”
Warren Maxwell and Strike Percussion, October 17, Downstage Theatre.
