LOCAL Body Election results have three new councillors taking a seat at the table.
Justin Lester replaces Hayley Wain in the Northern Ward, Simon “Swampy” Marsh replaces Rob Goulden in the Eastern Ward and Paul Eagle has claimed the Southern Ward seat left empty by Celia Wade-Brown. All three newcomers are first-time candidates.
Justin Lester topped the table for the Northern Ward with 3016 votes, knocking out Hayley Wain - first elected to council in 2004 at age 18 - who received 1426 votes.
“You’re always surprised at the results, but I campaigned hard and I really wanted to get in. I’m pretty chuffed at the outcome,” says Lester.
Simon “Swampy” Marsh received the news of the results from unsuccessful candidate Allan Probert.
“I was in Blenheim trying to access the results online when he called to congratulate me,” he says.
Marsh is hopeful a new perspective and an open mind will lend itself to council success.
“I like groups to work together and I would hope the council will do that. I strongly believe in an organisation like the council working towards the benefit of everybody in Wellington.”
Paul Eagle’s campaign relied heavily on door knocking; he and his supporters visited more than 9000 homes pre-election.
“After every day of door knocking we’d meet to discuss which main issues came up. When I announced what I was standing for, I wanted it to be based on what communities had actually said,” he says.
Eagle got the top spot in the Southern Ward, beating Bryan Pepperell by 112 votes.
“I was standing in the back of the atrium when the results were read,” he says, “I thought ‘Oh wow that’s my name that just got read out!’”

Mayoral show down

As Capital Times went to press, incumbent Mayor Kerry Prendergast led Celia Wade-Brown by 40 votes. Electoral officers are still waiting for 900 special votes to be counted. Results are expected at noon on October 13. Already 40 percent of eligible people have voted, which is higher than last year.
