WHEN Mark Williams, Film Archive’s exhibitions manager, was offered the chance to work on the collection of British filmmaker Malcolm Le Grice, he knew he couldn’t turn it down.
“[He’s] probably the most important avant-garde film-maker in Britain to emerge in the second half of the 20th Century.”
Williams was assigned to archiving Le Grice’s collection of 1966 to present day films while working in London last year, which afforded him an insight into the work that basically revolutionised cinema.
“Malcolm’s work takes in expanded cinema, using multiple projections, his body as a screen, shadow-play and multiple computer technologies. Considering the standard cinema experience of watching pure entertainment, this was very exciting in the 60s and potentially offered a whole new language for cinema.”
Le Grice is touring Australasia for the first and last time with his work, including a Wellington performance called The Image of Time.
The programme includes a screening of his 1971 collaboration with Brian Eno plus works made on 16mm film, computer and digital video.
