Wellington farewells guitar stalwart

Matthew Marshall (front) bids farewell to Wellington. Rear is New Zealand School of Music’s John Roxburgh and professor Donald Maurice and middle Jackie McCaughan, Jun He.
He’s been in Wellington for the past 20 years and is one of New Zealand’s leading classical guitarists, who has given master classes here and abroad and years ago studied under esteemed US guitarist David Leisner.
His long list of accomplishments includes 27 years of teaching, artistic direction for the New Zealand International Guitar Festival in 92, 96 and 2005 and winning prizes like London’s Royal Overseas Music Competition.
More recently, he’s taught at the New Zealand School of Music. He moved to the capital in 1991 to teach at what was then Wellington Polytechnic, and was the conservatorium of music head during the merger of the school with Massey University in 1996.
“I have had many students through my classes and am now teaching pupils of my former students.”
Marshall will work at Central Queensland University as a professor and dean of the creative and performing arts’ school at Mackay, 900km north of Brisbane.
He will travel throughout Australia to oversee several departments of the 22,000 student university.
He’s not going to swap performance for teaching though - he intends to tour with Sir Jon Trimmer and perform at London’s Purcell Room in 2012.
Marshall performs with the NZSM String Chamber Orchestra at the Ilot Theatre, Wellington Town Hall, October 22, 5.15pm. Masterpieces of the Baroque concludes the Friday@5 concert series.
