New Tourist
Jiang, 27, who began playing violin aged four, is Chinese-born, and came to live in New Zealand in 2002. She moved to Wellington last month to play in the first violin section of the NZSO.
“I can’t wait,” she says. “I’ve never toured before. It’s tiring, but for me it’s good experience.”
The orchestra departs on October 26 and returns mid-November. They play in China, but in Shanghai, so it’s not really a return home for Jiang who’s from Guangzhou.
“It’s really exciting. I really look forward to it,” Jiang says. “This is the biggest international trip of NZSO and they’re going to perform in several great music halls. Enjoying the sound in the great hall [in Vienna] – that will be the highlight.” The orchestra will play in China, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Slovenia
Jiang was last in Europe 11 years ago for a music competition and she’s looking forward to seeing it again, but she’s not feeling the pressure at all. She is instead really looking forward to proving that New Zealand can play on a world stage.
“In Europe most of the concerts have already sold out. I would like to just show them that NZSO is a world class orchestra. I don’t really feel pressure. I just try to play my best.”
Capital Times will update you on Pam’s progress during the tour.
