THERE’S a new Japanese variety store in Wellington, managed by a 22-year-old Chinese woman. Japan City is smack bang in the centre of Cuba Street, just up from the bucket fountain and its closest Western competitor The $2 Shop – although most goods vary from $3.45 to $10. It’s owned by a Chinese partnership from Auckland, says store manager Suki Gao, pictured. She learnt Japanese at high school and is interested in the country’s culture. “I really want to have the opportunity to practice Japanese.” she says.  Gao has travelled to Japan several times but has no ties to the place. She feels that the Japanese culture is more accepted in New Zealand. “I think Kiwis more like to accept Japanese rather that Chinese culture. In Kiwis’ minds…you always think Japanese stuff is higher quality.” Kao says goods are priced higher in Wellington than Auckland.

    Vinyl lovers take note: thousands of records are up for grabs at Wellington’s only record fair.  Collectors are invited to The Southern Cross to peruse piles from by ten different traders. Vinyl Club is a collaboration between Evil Genius, Rough Peel Music, Slow Boat Records, and Vanishing Point. Vinyl Club, The Southern Cross Bar, 12-4pm, May 26.

  • Miss a meal 23/05/2012 11:30:00 a.m.

    Food rescue group Kaibosh has been encouraging Wellingtonians to miss eating one meal during May. Kaibosh rescues food from retailers that’s good enough to eat, but not good enough to sell, and redistributes it to charities working with the disadvantaged. The group wants people to miss a meal and instead donate the money they would have spent. It hopes to raise $20,000 for a walk-in cool room.

    Wellngton's Pulse netball team has appointed two new directors as the franchise continues to strengthen both its governance and management teams. Prominent Wellington barrister Tim Castle and Land Information NZ acting chief executive Sue Gordon were appointed at the franchise’s AGM last week.

    Records are already being broken five weeks out from the Armstrong Wellington Marathon. More than 5,000 runners and walkers from nine different countries will line up at Westpac Stadium on June 24 for the marathon, half marathon, 10 kilometre and kids’ magic mile events, making it the biggest marathon event ever to be held in Wellington.
