Wellington City Council and Makara Peak Supporters Group are giving everyone a chance to have a go, with free guided tours of Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park – which last week tied for first in the New Zealand Recreation Association’s outstanding park award - from November through April.
The tours will be held on the first Sunday of every month and those keen to give it a go can just turn up on the day.
Senior park ranger Steven Peters helps organise the tours.
“The idea of the tours is that everyone can come along,” says Peters. “We don’t make a plan until we see who’s turned up, then we talk to them, see what they want to do and go from there.”
The park has a network of trails ranging from beginners through immediate to advanced in the skill levels required to ride them.
The trails wind through young
native bush.
“It’s a nice lowland forest to go riding through, amongst regenerating native bush. For the past 12 years volunteers have planted trees, taken care of weed control and killed pests. Also, for every metre of track built one native tree is planted. So far, there’s roughly 27km of track which means about 27,000 trees.”
Those interested in joining a tour should meet at the Makara Peak car park on South Karori Road, 10am, Sunday, November 7. Take your bike, a helmet, water bottle and a snack.
