What goes on, on tour?
IT’S concert day in Shanghai and we’ve just arrived at expo. Our instruments were freighted over so it’s been quite weird without my violin - normally it’s an extension of my body! I was trying to find it in the overhead locker on the flight and I was like, where is it?
Yesterday I went to the markets and bought little things. I went to my favourite dessert shop, Mango Sago. They mix fresh fruit with sago, which is chewy and transparent. I’m sure there’s lots of sugar but it’s so cold and nice, especially in China’s hot summer.
The Shanghainese are very busy - so many people live here, there’s a lot of competition. I like Shanghai food. My favourite is scampi, spicy with chilli. I haven’t tried the crab yet - it’s really famous here. Maybe tonight I’ll try it at dinner with Beiyi - an NZSO violinist from Shanghai.
Since Expo opened, there have been more than a million tourists every day and a lot of construction in the city. Last night I went to a bar on the top floor of the Hyatt building. You could see the whole city from east to west - the cruises on the river, the towers, everything. It was beautiful.
This week the NZSO performs at Freiburg, Germany, the Narodni dom Maribor in Slovenia, Vienna’s prestigious Musikverein and two halls in Switzerland.
