Students on a world stage
Jirí Kylián, who choreographs the Kylián programme sponsored by the Dutch Embassy, is a significant figure in the dance world.
He’s choreographed some 100 works and been associated with Nederlands Dans Theatre –and was artistic director - for 30 years.
Website Network Dance.Net names Kylián, who was born in Prague in 1947, “one of the greatest choreographers”.
The graduation programme, which includes contemporary and classical styles, is, for the first time, split into two separate programmes on two different nights.
Meanwhile, on a more Wellington stage, WOW’s Montana World of WearableArt Awards Show artistic director, Mahlia Johnston, presents one of five New Zealand pieces for the Kiwi programme. Her piece atoms & Eve is performed with 16 women and she says having that many dancers on stage at once is unusual and structurally challenging.
“New Zealanders usually work with smaller cast. But the energy of having that many women dancing is quite beautiful.”
The other choreographers for the kiwi programme are: Craig Bary and Sarah Foster – who designed world premieres of Tragic Best and Go Home Stay Home respectively - Raewyn Hill and Michael Parmenter.
Kylián and Kiwi, Te Whaea: National Dance and Drama Centre, from November 17.
