Hop to it

MOUNT Victoria is set to get a new local.
The Hop Garden will open mid-December in the blue-and-white glass-roofed building on Pirie Street that used to house Greek Taverna Kosmos.
The bar is the latest project by James Henderson, owner of Bar Edward in Newtown.
“It’s exactly the sort of place I’ve been looking for. I drove past it every day for two weeks, then thought ‘you know what James? Take a chance’, so I did,” he says.
The bar will offer 80-90 beers, the same number of wines and 40 single malt whiskies, and the menu will feature Mediterranean tapas options. There will be live music, and after people have finished eating tables and chairs will move back to make room for a dance floor.
James sees not being directly in the city as an asset, not a risk.
“It’s going to be a social place, not somewhere to get tanked. We’ve got to learn that drinking is fine as long as you respect it; that you can drink six nights a week, you just have to keep your drinks to two or three,” he says.
“It’ll be a place for nice people to have a nice drink, and the kind of place I want to take my family.”
Best of all: “It’s going to be somewhere that everyone can afford.” Bring it on.
