New age to New Age: Colin and Laurel Chiles.

New age to New Age: Colin and Laurel Chiles.

CRAIG Lambert was upset when he heard new age bookshop Pinnacle Books is shifting.
“Sometimes you go to a place and you get lost: forget about time and space,” says Lambert, who likes to spend up to an hour at a time in the bookshop on Willis Street.
“The people here have created a sanctuary. There’s the sense that you don’t want to leave the shop. I love this place. You can...lose yourself. I come here to let go.”
It’s no great wonder then, that the bookshop specialises in new age books, such as self help, astrological and spiritual titles. And the store, according to Laurel Chiles, who bought the business with her husband Colin 15 years ago, has certainly carved its own niche.
“The other bookshops send people to us if they’re looking for this type of book.”
Self help books certainly seem to be everywhere. Each week there seems to be a new bestseller – take The Power of Now, or How to Win Friends and Influence People, or Women are From Mars, Men are From Venus. Laurel reckons it’s about people needing something to believe in.
“Lots of people are always searching for something better.”
Pinnacle Books is shifting Duke’s Arcade in December. But from January the owners will be in their new, permanent shop back on Willis Street.
