Klezmerising Houdini
“Klezmer music reflects the joys and sorrows of the human voice. You can hear laughs and cries in the music, especially in the violin and clarinet,” says David Weinstein, guitarist, mandolin player and vocalist in Wellington band Klezmer Rebs,
It’s “very lively folk music”. An upcoming gig at The Ruby Lounge is a chance for a shift of focus.
Poet Lynn Jenner approached the band and said, ‘When I’m reading these poems aloud I hear your music, can we try and work some stuff together?’”
Jenner’s first collection of work, titled Dear Sweet Harry, won the Adam Foundation Prize in creative writing before it was even published this year.
“The collection is not traditional poetry; more a series of impressions about characters who have moved her to write,” says Weinstein. “The characters Jenner and the band have focused on are the great escapist Harry Houdini and dancer, sensualist and accused WWII spy Mata Hari.
