PETONE’S about to get a new space for live theatre, and it’s opening in the spirit of Christmas.
Actress Geraldine Brophy will perform her one-woman play Mrs Merry’s Christmas Concert at THE BOX, a space created by Brophy and her partner.
“It’s the first little boutique theatre we’ve had in Petone. They say this place is the gateway to the Hutt, but it’s also the back door to Wellington. The idea is that this is another live small-scale venue for Wellington,” says Brophy.
“I don’t see it as competition so much as just making live performance more accessible. Live performance is after all the one thing you can’t download.”
The play is done in the style of the primary school Christmas concert, and Brophy plays a teacher (Mrs Merry) and eight children.
Brophy says she talked to many children and their teachers researching the play.
“It’s easy to say as an adult they children are naïve but in many ways they are profound. When we’re under seven we have no cynicism, and in many ways I believe we’re closer to spirituality.”
Brophy says the play contains both poignant and comedic moments, “As one of the children said to me, ‘Did you know there are 20 “wharves” working for Santa Claus in the North Pole?’”
Mrs Merry’s Christmas Concert, THE BOX, 47 Buick Street, Petone, December 3-18.
