When in doubt, sing

Unplugged and possibly a little unhinged; Bryan Crump leads Doubtful Sounds members Jane McKinley, Gary Smith and Keith Stewart, Lisa Mutch and Jillian Dempster are obscured.
He’s also musical director and performer in local choral group Doubtful Sounds, although he likes to put it Frank Zappa once did; the songs are “produced, arranged and struggled with,” by Crump.
“It’s a choir but for some reason we prefer to see ourselves as a group, it’s something like reverse snobbery.”
Doubtful Sounds was started by Crump in 2005.
“Most bands jam in the evening and certainly most choirs, so because of the nature of my job the only way to keep involved in music was to organise it myself.”
The group featured members of a gospel choir Crump had been involved with previously, “But more and more we ended up doing our own versions of pop tunes. The choir is a mix of incredibly good singers and some who had never sung in public, it’s been very interesting getting that to gel. Those with classical training have trouble performing without music and those who can’t read music can only memorise it, so that’s a bit of a leveller.”
The “unplugged and a little unhinged” choral group will perform songs by Coldplay, Michael Jackson, Prince and Eurythmics. They will be joined on stage by The Dusky Sounds Philharmonic.
“Some of the songs just cry out for strings”, says Crump.
“It’s definitely family-friendly, not a stiff, serious classical environment. It’ going to be a lot of fun.”
Doubtful Sounds, 2:30pm, Breaker Bay Hall, 150 Breaker Bay Road, December 5.
