Memories of last century
From the youthful woman with baby who pointed out toys from her childhood (like authentic My Little Ponies – not these remade ones you get now) – “makes you feel old having it in a museum” – to the couple who’d travelled all the way from Tauranga to see European Masters, but were enchanted instead by the goods of formative New Zealand: the reaction was the same.
“I feel like I just want to jump in there,” says Sheila Smith, “All your stuff’s in there and it brought back so many memories. It was well worth the trip.”
Other comments ranged from: “hey, that was my first cellphone”, to “Mum used to have heaps of those phonecards”, and “there’s the toys my kids played with”.
So, if you remember the carless days of the 60s and 70s, listened to New Kids on the Block, used an analogue camcorder or processed food with a Ralta Kitchen Whizz; if you remember Commodore 64, or want to glimpse back into the early Shortland Street mags of the 90s; reconnect with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Game of Life, or Pick Up Monkeys, this exhibition is worth a look.
And on Saturdays there are events for kids – maybe hearing Dick Weir telling stories, or making a decoration for Te Papa’s Christmas tree.
Slice of Heaven. Te Papa.
