We’re not dysfunctional

RESULTS are in from the Pricewaterhouse Coopers review of how Wellington might be governed in the future.
Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy who is leading the Wellington Regional Governance Review says, “We need to make sure that we have the right processes in place to keep Wellington the best city in NZ, and the most important thing is that [this review] shows there is no evidence of dysfunction.”
“It is the opinion of two authors who wrote it from Pricewaterhouse Coopers,” he says.
“But now we can say: ‘What are we doing in Wellington well? How can we fix any issues?”
He says the six options for potential future governing arrangements are a “good starting point”.
The review came as a result of the nationwide interest in the reform of local government in the Auckland region; the Wellington Mayoral Forum engaged Pricewaterhouse Coopers to review its current governance arrangements.
Any change could range from the idea of a Wellington super city to various forms of cooperation and consolidation between councils.
“Any change has to be worked through,” Guppy says. “You don’t want to just imitate what everyone else has done. We need to put the facts on the table and see how we can fix any issues.”
The Wellington Regional Governance Review report is on www.wcc.govt.nz website for feedback to February 11.
The mayoral forum will discuss the matter in March.
