Surf champions
Points are taken from the best three results of four competitions. Of the five years surfboats have competed nationally, Titahi Bay has won four times.
“There’s an expectation that you work hard and train to win, that second isn’t good enough. That mentality has always been quite strong here,” says Tim Marsden, a winning team member.
Members train 12 times a week and are all volunteers.
“It’s fun and you make good friends doing it,” says Marsden. “Then there’s the honour of representing your country if you get that far.”
National selectors were at the race to select a crew to represent New Zealand at the International Surf Challenge in Mount Maunganui in February.
“The other trial is in Whangamata in January. If we win that, we’ll be the New Zealand crew,” says Marsden.
