WELLINGTON waterfront is the new ‘place to be’ this New Year’s eve if you are stuck in the city.
The Wellington City Council has scrapped the annual Civic Square band shindig.
Instead of being crammed into the square you can now watch roving buskers and performers and wander freely between entertainment zones placed in three locations: between Circa Theatre and Te Papa on the harbour side of the silver sculptures, on the City To Sea Bridge opposite the grassy knoll, and north of the lagoon pedestrian bridge, in front of Frank Kitts Park.
And don’t worry – there shouldn’t be a mad dash to the ‘countdown zone’ at midnight as clocks will be projected onto a wall of Te Papa as well as an exterior panel of the Michael Fowler Centre, which can be viewed from Civic Square.
If you do miss the countdown, head to The Garden Club as promoter Blink (Ian Jorgensen) has been known to turn back time at his NYE parties.
“I did some New Year city parties in 2007/8 and forgot about the countdown and about ten minutes after midnight I remembered and put the clocks back and jumped on stage and pulled it off. I actually turned back time,” he says.
Blink, who is the brains behind the annual Camp A Low Hum music festival, won’t forget the countdown this year though at A Low Hum NYE – Big City Dreams.
“It’s unashamedly ‘party’. It’s definitely not sitting around and getting your ‘shoegaze’ on. Last year we did Big Field of Dreams in Wainuiomata and we were all hicks out there, so this year we wanted to do something back in the city, especially because I needed something to do myself,” he says laughing.
The party, which goes all night, from 6pm-6am, will include 25 bands such as Disasteradio, Bang Bang Eche, Thought Creature, Surf Friends, Little Bark, Bono, and Signer, amongst others. There will be two rooms with two stages – Disco Bang Bang Bang and The Terrace Bar.
“I got so many emails from people saying: ‘I have to work till 6 or 7pm’, so I thought I would look after blue collar society – take care of the little people. Town is going to be empty of idiots as many people are going out of town to music festivals, so it’s actually desirable to be back in the city. While people are out in the country trying to crawl their way home, we’ll be here.”
A Low Hum NYE – Big City Dreams, The Garden Club, December 31, 6pm-6am. Tickets from Real Groovy or www.alowhum.com
