THE achievements of Wellington youth were celebrated last weekend at the Pride Awards.
“As a community sometimes we forget to say thank you to young people,” says Amani Younis, director of ceremony and event coordinator. “Their families were so happy, a hundred times more than the children themselves. For the kids it’s just in their nature to be creative and aim for success.”
Rachel Duignan, 16, from St Catherine’s College won the ‘Positive Attitude Award’.
Rachel’s father John Duignan said, “[Rachel’s] not afraid to have a crack at most things and when she does it’s with 100% effort. It was a very proud moment for us.”
Rachel was nominated for doing things like coaching water polo and helping out at the tuck shop, which is “Just something I do to help people,” she says.
“I give up heaps of my time to do these things, getting [the award] reinforces that people appreciate what I’m doing it and helps me to drive harder.”
Four of the 10 awards went to students at Maungaraki School in Lower Hutt.
“It’s such a creative school. Everything they teach, they re-form to be creative,” says Younis.
The rest of the winners are:
Academic all round student Award: McCauley Ross, Health & Fitness Award: Anthea Coleman; Team Work: Liam Taufale; Creative Achievement Award: Alana Kirby; Community First Award: Jade Kopua; Positive Attitude Award: Rachel Duignan; Youth Leadership Award: Jessica Huijink; Overcoming Adversity Award: Harvey Frost; Carers Award: Zac Fairweather; Bright Spark Award: Vaughan Austin.
