Chinese violinist brings in the New Year
Yang, since she was 11, has been startling people all round the world with her remarkable ability, and will appear with Australian counter tenor Jon Jackson, and Hong Kong associate conductor Perry So.
The NZSO is using Chinese New Year to focus on China’s growing importance in the classical music world. Talented musicians are emerging out of China – Yang being one of the better recognized– and are becoming significant figures in music.
The orchestra will perform Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor From the New World after opening with music from the Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng. Then, arias from Jack Body’s opera Alley (based on the life of Rewi Alley - the New Zealand writer, poet and hero of the Chinese Revolution), and the lively sounds of Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole will fill the Michael Fowler Centre.
Chinese New Year in Wellington gets bigger every year and has become a major celebration.
Next week Capital Times highlights Chinese New Year activities for 2011.
Postcards from Exotic Places – a Chinese New Year concert, MFC, 8pm, January 29.
