Weta’s WotWots go Korean
The preschool animated series, which features blue and pink alien-like TV puppets, SpottyWot and DottyWot, has been picked up by Korea’s C4U Entertainment channel.
In addition, Korean Distribution Company Kenny and Co. has placed the show, which will start screening there in March, on local network Kids Talk Talk and JEI TV.
Their creators, Weta Workshop director Sir Richard Taylor and author illustrator and children’s TV creator/producer Martin Baynton, are proud to have sold their cuddly creatures.
“When we created the idea, we called them ‘WotWots’ because pre-schoolers always ask ‘what is this, what is that’, so they have their own ‘WotWots’ language”, says Taylor. Now the ‘WotWot’ language will be translated into Korean. The series, which is broadcast each weekend in NZ has been sold to around 50 countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, US, Poland and has even been broadcast across the Arab world by Al Jazeera.
The WotWots feature two siblings SpottyWot and DottyWot, who land in a zoo (filmed in Wellington and Auckland) on earth in a steam-powered spaceship. Here they explore the ‘funny’ creatures on earth. “It is about the joy of learning and discovering’, says Martin Baynton, also famous for his book and TV series - ‘Jane and the Dragon’.
This Sunday, February 6, there is a children’s day at Weta Cave, featuring free films for the kids, colouring-in activities, WotWots stamps, plus fun activities featuring Taylor and Baynton’s other creation Jane and the Dragon. 10am – 3pm.
