SUPERFISH, the Wairarapa Sports Fishing Club’s main tournament, will be held at Castlepoint on Waitangi weekend. Last year, Stokes Valley fisherman Dave Jarvis won the award with his 157.5kg thresher shark – the first shark to be brought to the weigh station in the past five years.
Focusing mainly on game fish, fishermen will be chasing a variety of fish including tuna, kingfish, kahawai, barracuda, gurnard and shark. With the emphasis on sustainable fishing the competition has been refined with new requirements including minimum weights, tagging and the release of fish. This year, a $10,000 prize pool is up for grabs as well as a $1000 cash prize for a broadbill over 50kg. The weigh in is at 4pm – 6pm on Saturday and 3pm – 5pm on Sunday. Fishing times: 6am - 7pm, February 5. 6am to 3.30pm,
February 6. Major prize giving: Clubrooms, 6pm, February 6.
