Make the most of the coast
The festival lasts nine days, and with 15 new events there is something for everyone.
Highlights include Shaolin monks teaching free self defence classes for men and women on February 14 and Pacific Island and Maori poetry evening ‘Ode to Moana Nui a Kiwa’ from 5-6.30pm at Floyd’s on February 16.
For those who want to get active there are soccer, tennis and squash competitions – plus you can watch as Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett is challenged to a doubles squash game. There’s also ‘Zumba’ for seniors on February 16 and a ‘baby disco’ on February 19 at St Hilda’s church hall, where the under fives can boogie, play games and wave glow sticks around.
The film archive returns to Empire Cinema to play old footage of Island Bay set to live piano on February 16 and local historian and singer Ken Scaddon will host a night of sea shanties and southern shipwreck sea stories at the Island Bay bar on February 15.
“There’s some heart wrenching stories and some funny ones, by the end of the evening the whole crowd’s usually swaying to and fro, singing and listening to fantastic stories,” says Baylis.
A day in the bay is the big family day - on February 13. Market stalls take over the waterfront, the fishing boats are blessed in front of the island and Bella Kalolo is MC and host for bands Nudge, Bebe Deluxe, The Aviators and The Good Words at Shorland Park.
