CAMPGROUND Chaos transforms the circus ring into a multi-sport, adventure playground. The Fuse Circus open-air performance, inspired by an iconic Kiwi holiday pastime, mixes juggling, acrobatics and swinging.
Summer holiday at camping grounds are already a circus: kids jump off picnic tables as parents barbeque and boil packet pasta. Frisbees fly, rugby balls bounce and caravans and tents collide. Campground Chaos takes the iconic Kiwiana holiday at a campground and creates a circus performance.
“The campground idea naturally lends itself to physical theatre,” says Tom Beauchamp, performer and director of Fuse Circus.
“We find a world where a circus can take place and make it one.”
Beauchamp is a performer himself and in the show catches 80kg acrobat, jumping from a picnic table, who weighs more than he. Forget the bowling pins and fire sticks – jugglers will toss anything they can get a hold of in this spectacle, including rugby balls, cricket bats and other sports equipment. Adding to the chaos, a dream sequence transports the characters, in flashy showbiz attire, to Las Vegas.
This year, Fuse Circus has a new look and cast, and the music is entirely Kiwi.
At the end of the show, viewers donate what they think the show deserves. Take a fold-up chair and find a spot – just watch out for the tyre swings and flying picnic tables.
Campground Chaos, Frank Kitts Park, 8.15pm, February 17-26. Matinee shows, 2pm, February 19, 20 and 26.
