Karnival time in Karori
Organised by the Karori Lions, which was formed in 1969, the Karnival adopted a ‘K’ rather than a ‘C’ as a gimmick in 1971 when the Karnival formed and “it’s stuck ever since”, says Karnival Convenor Mary Snook.
People can spend ages picking through objects at the Karnival to find a ‘diamond in the rough’, she adds.
With a population of around 14,000, Karori is larger than other Wellington suburbs, which means plenty to pick through. What distinguishes a collectible from ordinary rubbish is not always clear, Snook says.
“We had to end the white elephant stall as we would go round with trailers and cars and pick up the white elephant contributions but there simply was too much stuff for us to pick up. You can always find some great things. Students can pick up full cutlery sets,” she says.
As well as old trinkets the main attraction is the large obstacle course style bouncy castle, plus Zumba, live bands and rock ‘n’ roll.
